Bluenoid heeft een nieuwe plaat uit: ‘For Dancing Only’. Het is het tweede full album van de Herentalse producer, na ‘A Darker Matter’ uit 2020, en de EP ‘Execute_One’ uit 2021. Tijd dus voor een babbeltje.

For Dancing Only, verklaar die titel eens even?

For Dancing Only is het motto waaronder ik muziek maak. Eigenlijk is dat heel simpel, ik maak gewoon de muziek waarop ik zelf graag dans. Meer moet er dan ook niet achter gezocht worden, geen grote boodschappen, geen diepe menselijke analyse, geen allesverklarende analyse voor de mensheid. Gewoon muziek om op te dansen.

Je hebt daar wel een vreemde carrièreswitch voor moeten maken?

Dat kan je wel zeggen. Ik heb meer dan 25 jaar de podia van Vlaanderen en Nederland afgeschuimd als podiumdichter, een vijftal bundels en een boek uitgegeven. Ik heb als dichter opgetreden op LowLands en ben zelfs ooit op een tien dagen durende toernee geweest in Zuid-Afrika met mijn poëzie.

Maar de connectie met de muziek is altijd geweest. Ik heb vaak opgetreden met jazzgitarist Luc Van Steenbergen of met producer Nicolas Van Eccelpoel. Ook stond er regelmatig een Groovebox op het podium. Voor ik dichter was trad ik ook met een gitaar en percussie op, en speelde ik in een reggae- en een punkband. Dus het bloed kruipt waar het niet gaan kan, en de muziek is altijd blijven doorstromen.

Van punk naar reggae, en dan nu techno? Dat is toch ook een hele evolutie.

I beg to differ, zeggen ze zo mooi in het Engels. Punk en reggae hebben elkaar al heel snel beïnvloed, met The Clash als bekendste voorbeeld. de dubreggae van Lee Perry en Mad Professor heeft vervolgens een grote invloed gehad op de dansmuziek en vervolgens heeft de techno-scene de Do It Yourself-mentaliteit van de punk overgenomen. Alle drie de genres zijn compromisloos underground en zoeken naar connectiviteit tussen mensen.

Do It Yourself, daar kan jij duidelijk ook over meepraten?

Inderdaad. Ik regel al jaren quasi alles zelf. Met de vzw Kortsluiting heb ik echt een speeltuin gecreëerd waar ik artistiek en organisatorisch mijn ding volledig kan doen. Ik geef bundels uit, kan optredens organiseren, platen uitbrengen, e-books publiceren, … Ik doe zelf de opmaak van boeken en platenhoezen, de productie van muziek, video’s en digitale publicaties, de public relations, … Ik doe zelfs mijn eigen interviews.

Ah ja, dat is waar.

Ik ben een simpele Kempenzoon, en ik heb een fijn gezin en een leuke baan. Maar artistiek moet ik me kunnen uitleven. Doordat ik van idee tot uitwerking zelf voor alles insta, kan ik gezin en werk combineren. Dat betekent wel dat ik regelmatig met een hoofdtelefoon tot in de diepe uurtjes van de nacht bezig ben. Maar zo breng ik nu eenmaal mijn wat onrustige geest tot kalmte.

De nieuwe plaat bestaat uit 9 nummers, met 8 zware technoknallers en op het einde een uitgesponnen meditatietrack. Hoe ga je te werk en waar haal je die ideeën?

Op muzikaal vlak ben ik een echte bricoleur. Ik haal samples van het internet, draai aan knopjes die ik niet ken, zet een echo op een delay, met een snuifje fuzz om een drum te laten knallen. Soms werkt dat, soms moet ik gewoon herbeginnen.

Ik steel ook met mijn ogen. Toen Eddy Weyns (Eduardo Delvino, Nanouchi Music) mijn eerste nummer Sounds Dirty uitbracht, heb ik uren in zijn studio gezeten en gewoon alles opgeslorpt wat hij deed. Dat nummer brengen we trouwens opnieuw uit op For Dancing Only.

Verder krijg ik regelmatig deuntjes of teksten in mijn hoofd en dan werk ik die uit. Dat gebeurt soms op gitaar of piano, of ik speel ze snel in op Garageband op de iPad. Of ik start de pc op en begin gewoon muziek te maken. Dat wisselt elke dag.

Waar kunnen we For Dancing Only beluisteren?

De plaat is op alle streamingdiensten te vinden. Dus je kan ze via Spotify, Tidal of Deezer vinden. Ook op YouTube is ze natuurlijk te vinden. DJ’s kunnen ze downloaden op Beatport, dus als je een feest goed wil doen losbarsten, weet je wat je moet doen.

Bluenoid has released a new album: ‘For Dancing Only’. This is the second full album by the Belgian producer, after ‘A Darker Matter’ from 2020, and the EP ‘Execute_One’ from 2021. Time for a chat.

For Dancing Only, explain that title?

For Dancing Only is the motto under which I make music. In fact, it’s very simple: I just make the music that I like to dance to. No big messages, no deep human analysis, no all-encompassing analysis of humanity. Just music to dance to.

You had to make a strange career switch for that?

You could say that. For more than 25 years, I have skimmed the stages of Flanders and the Netherlands as a performing poet, publishing five collections and a book. I have performed as a poet at LowLands and once even went on a ten-day tour of South Africa with my poetry.

However, the connection with music has always been there. I have often performed with jazz guitarist Luc Van Steenbergen or with producer Nicolas Van Eccelpoel. There was also a Groovebox on stage regularly.

Before I was a poet, I also performed with a guitar and percussion, and played in a reggae and a punk band. So blood is thicker than water, and the music has always kept flowing.

From punk to reggae, and now techno? That is quite an evolution too.

I beg to differ, as they say in English. Punk and reggae influenced each other very quickly, with The Clash as the most famous example. Lee Perry and Mad Professor’s dub reggae then had a great influence on dance music and then the techno scene adopted punk’s Do It Yourself mentality. All three genres are uncompromisingly underground and seek to connect people.

Do It Yourself, you’re one of them, right?

Yes, I do. For years, I’ve arranged almost everything myself. With Kortsluiting I have created a playground where I can do my own thing, both artistically and organisationally. I publish collections, can organise performances, release records, publish e-books, … I do the layout of books and record sleeves, the production of music, videos and digital publications, the public relations, … I even do my own interviews.

Ah yes, that is true.

I am a simple son of The Kempen, and I have a nice family and a nice job. But I need to be able to indulge myself artistically. Because I take care of everything myself, from idea to execution, I can combine family and work. This does mean that I am regularly working with headphones until the wee hours of the night. But that’s how I calm down my somewhat restless mind.

The new album consists of nine tracks, with eight heavy techno stunners and a long meditation track at the end. How do you work and where do you get your ideas?

Musically, I’m a real DIYer. I get samples from the internet, turn knobs I don’t know, put an echo on a delay, with a pinch of fuzz to make a drum pop. Sometimes that works, sometimes I just have to start over.

I also steal with my eyes. When Eddy Weyns (Eduardo Delvino, Nanouchi Music) released my first song Sounds Dirty, I spent hours in his studio and just absorbed everything he did. We are releasing that song again on For Dancing Only.

I regularly get tunes or lyrics in my head and then I work them out. Sometimes I do that on guitar or piano, or I play them quickly in Garageband on the iPad. Or I start up the PC and just start making music. That changes every day.
